Chapter 1
The soft snow felt cool under Crystal’s pads. She knew she was dreaming, she had had this dream before. The scents of the forest flooded around her. A new scent mingled with it now, the smell of rabbit. Crystal saw the artic hare and crouched.
Pawstep by pawstep she crept. Then Crystal heard a beat. Thud thud thud thump. Thud thud thud thump. Crystal shook her head. The beat had always distracted her. She looked at the rabbit. It was making the tapping noise. She crept closer.
She was now close enough to pounce. Music then settled into her dream. “Trying your best to bring the water to your eyes, thinking that might stop me from whoopin’ your behind. I wish those days could come back for more.” Crystal found herself tapping to the beat. Snow flew everywhere until the ground was just bare ice and rock.
Suddenly the music stopped as soon as it came. Crystal looked around, searching for the rabbit. It was gone.
“Darn!” she hissed and raced forward, not knowing where her paws where taking her. She stopped in her tracks as a new scent filled her nose. It was a certain fish that she liked, salmon it was called.
◊ ◊ ◊ ◊ ◊ ◊ ◊ ◊ ◊ ◊ ◊ ◊
Crystal’s eyes slid open slowly and she lifted her head. Her pet’s mother had made salmon and laid it out for her. She slipped out of the soft bed to the food. The warm scent had filled her nostrils as she caressed it in her mouth. She finished the salmon and went to the tap water. After she lapped it up she sat on her haunches and began to lick herself clean. Then after her wash she padded to the room where her pet watched a flicker-box. There was a smaller box that hooked to the flicker-box. Crystal found her pet on the big soft bed looking at the flicker-box. She held a small object in her big paws.
She jumped up to sit next to her and laid her eyes on the flicker-box. Crystal decided to get down because it was too soft up there. Music came out of the flicker-box. “That’s the way uh-huh uh-huh I like it, uh-huh uh-huh. That’s the way uh-huh uh-huh I like it, uh-huh uh-huh.” Crystal’s paws tingled and started to tap. After a while she heard the mother yowl. Then her pet went toward the smaller box and pushed something. The flicker-box faded, the music gone. The lights were turned off and both pets went to their beds. The house was quiet. Crystal stopped tapping and decided it was time to go outside.
She pushed through the cat flap to the outdoors and laid her trash behind a bush. Then she jumped upon her post. In front of her home was a snow forest. Crystal longed to go in there someday, but she just couldn’t find the time. She heard a sigh from behind her.
“Hello Rico.” she mewed.
“Oh yeah? Just forget about me then.” growled a voice.
“How can I forget about you, Thorn?” she faced them. Rico was the white long haired tom on the left. He had sapphire eyes. Thorn was the black tom on the right with piercing emerald eyes.
Crystal herself was beige with seal points. She was born Siam with purebred Siamese cats. Siamese cats with dark brown points and intense sapphire eyes. Her mother and father were both perfect Siamese. Crystal was in their first litter. Being the youngest, she was picked on a lot. Another reason that she got picked on was because she got her points early. Instead of dark brown, her points were as black as night. Also her eyes were the color of ice. Her nation said that she wasn’t a true Siamese. Because of her difference, Crystal was shipped to America to live the life of a regular cat.
That’s when she met Rico and Thorn. They’ve been friends for about a moon. The three of them were like kin.
Thorn pricked his ears, “Something bothering you?”
Crystal yawned, “No.”
“Are you bored?” asked Rico.
“Well, all we do is sit on this fence and talk. Sometimes we run around the nest, but we never go anywhere else.” She jumped down from the post. Thor n and Rico followed her.
“Like the forest for instance.” She flicked her tail towards it.
Rico gave her a worried glance. “Remember when my brother went in there? He said that there are wildcats in there, bigger, meaner than him. He said that they fight for food and shelter.” He shuddered. “I can’t even think about living there.”
“Who said anything about living there?” Crystal put her tail over his muzzle. “One little peek won’t kill us.” She padded towards the forest, her tail high in the air.
“Curiosity killed the cat!” Rico yowled after her.
Thorn looked at him, “Your brother may be fooling you.” And then he followed Crystal.
“He’s always been mean to me. Always scaring me by lying.” He muttered, and then trailed after them.
The trio entered the forest, ears pricked for danger. Crystal tried her hardest to look for prey. She heard a muffled yelp behind her. She looked back to see a ditch. Crystal looked inside to see Rico sprawled out. She let out a mrrow of laughter. Then she glanced at Thorn. She saw the black tom looking up at the sun.
“What are you doing?” she asked.
“Hey guys, can you help me out?” mewed Rico.
Thorn and Crystal ran back to the ditch, “Sorry Rico.”
Crystal bent down to help her friend up when she heard a yowl from behind her. She felt weight slam down on her. Thorn sharp claws dug into her back. Crystal writhed until she pretended to be dead. Her body went limp and the weight lifted. She heard a growl from behind her, “Typical kittypet.”
Anger burned inside Crystal as she spun around and attacked the pursuer. The cat that had attacked her was white with a black tail tip and black ear tips. Thorn saw the two she-cats tumbling together. He joined in the fight. The two friends fought fiercely against the wildcat. Then it was over. The white cat’s fur had bad scratches in her fur. Crystal looked down at her chest to see blood. She licked it away. Then she heard Rico call out, “What’s happening up there?”
The white she-cat looked at Crystal, then at Thorn, then back at Crystal. “What are two kittypets doing in the forest? I thought that they stay in the comfort of their twoleg nest.” She meowed, “And also that a kittypet isn’t a strong fighter.”
“I guess you thought wrong then.” growled Crystal.
“My name’s Runningpaw. I’m from IceClan. That’s the territory you’re in now.” meows the white cat. Runningpaw seemed to be less hostile now.
My name’s Crystal,” Crystal meowed and pointing to Thorn with her tail, “And he’s Thorn.”
Runningpaw gave them a nod, “Okay. So what are two kittypets doing in the forest?”
“We came to explore.” meowed Thorn.
“Help?” mewed Rico.
Thorn and Crystal bent over the ditch and helped the white tom out, “This is Rico.”
Rico’s pelt prickled, “Who’s that?!” He was looking straight at Runningpaw.
“Her name is Runningpaw.” explained Crystal.
Runningpaw’s nose twitched “I smell my clanmates coming. I can’t be seen with you guys here. Go!”
There was a pause. Crystal looked down at her paws. I want to see her clanmates, but I’m afraid they’ll tear me to shreds. She thought.
Runningpaw’s claws were unsheathed, “Go!! They’ve probably scented you already.” And she sheathed her claws.
They heard the crunching of snow and then they saw a white she-cat and a ginger she-cat. The white she-cat growled, “Runningpaw, what are three kittypets doing here? In IceClan territory?” Her voice was calm but stern.
Runningpaw looked down at her paws. “Softvoice, I fougt two of these kittypets and we ended in a tie. They didn’t mean to invade, they just explored the area. I’m sorry.”
Crystal couldn’t see her new friend in trouble. “But it’s not only you’re fault.” she yowled. All the eyes were on her now. “It was my idea to go into the forest. I was bored staying at the garden.”
“Please,” she sniffed, “don’t blame Runningpaw.”
The ginger cat snapped, “No one disrespects our deputy like that -”
“You got spunk, kid.” interrupted the white cat.
The ginger cat’s jaws gaped, “Softvoice, your not going to take this shame of a cat’s insult, are you?”
Softvoice silenced her by putting her tail on the ginger cat’s mouth, “I honor your courage, kittypet. Others would have not done that to wildcats. Your names please?”
They told the wildcats their names. The ginger she-cats name had been Sunfire.
Softvoice meowed, “Now go back to your twolegs, where you belong.” She started to turn tail when Crystal meowed, “Wait! I’ve been thinking. I…I…I want to join your Clan.”
Sunfire and Softvoice murmured to each other. Softvoice turned to Crystal, “The one problem is that Battlestar won’t allow it. I can make an acceptation though.”
Sunfire broke in, “But a kittypet can’t join IceClan! They don’t have warrior blood!”
Softvoice turned to Sunfire, “Do you know what seasons coming up?!”
“Of course I know. Leafbare. Even a kit knows that.” She answered.
“Yes. And you know as well as I know that all Clans suffer, especially IceClan, in Leafbare. We need more warriors!” With that said she turned tail and left.
Sunfire faced Crystal, “Apparently, Softvoice is saying that you’re welcome into the Clan. Battlestar may think otherwise but only StarClan knows. We’ll give you until Sunup tomorrow to decide.” She left, and then added, “Come on, Runningpaw!”
Runningpaw nodded thanks to Crystal and waved goodbye with her tail as she trotted off.
“Fearsome creatures these wildcats are. So powerful…” mewed Rico.
Crystal looked over at Thorn. A look of discontent was on his face. “It’s like Rico and I weren’t even here!”
Her mind buzzed as the friends walked back home. Yeah, she thought, I don’t even know for sure if I want to live with them. Half of me wants to live with my pet and tap to the music of the flickerbox and another half of me wants to live free with my friends and Runningpaw. She shook her head as they neared their homes.
“Bye.” meowed the toms as they went into their nests.
“Bye.” Crystal meowed and pushed through the cat flap. She found her soft bed and, all curled up and cozy, fell asleep.
◊ ◊ ◊ ◊ ◊ ◊ ◊ ◊ ◊ ◊ ◊ ◊
In her dream, Crystal dreamt of herself as she is now. She itched at her collar around her neck. It was uncomfortable but beautiful. She didn’t understand why she had to have one when Thorn and Rico didn’t have one. Then Crystal was in the forest and felt a breeze on her neck. The collar was gone. She studied the forest around her. She could see eyes looking back at her. The Clan cats have entered her dream.
Suddenly, a howl of a wolf was heard. The sound shocked Crystal. Then it stopped. Music instead took its place in her dream. “Boogie Wonderland! Dance! Dance! Mumble!” She could hear the tapping in the song and began to tap along with it. “Click-ity, click-ity, click-ity, click-ity, click!” She mimicked the tapping.
◊ ◊ ◊ ◊ ◊ ◊ ◊ ◊ ◊ ◊ ◊ ◊
She fell out of the basket, surprised from her awakening. Crystal licked her right paw. “I must have kicked myself out of bed.”

She padded to the room with the flickerbox. One last glance wouldn’t hurt. She thought. “So now you’re back, from outer space. I walked in here with that look upon your face.” Before she knew it she was tapping again. “Now go, walk out the door. Cause you’re not welcome anymore. I will survive. I will survive.” The song ended. Crystal stopped tapping. A tear formed in her eye. She wiped it away with her tail. It was perfect for the time now; for she was leaving, to live with the Clan.
Crystal stepped out into the suns rays. When she began to step out and walk into the forest, she saw two figures walk out too.
“Thorn! Rico!” she called out. The two figures bounded toward her. “I didn’t know you were coming also.”
“What, and miss all the adventure?” they both replied. “No way!”
The three cats trotted into the forest. The sparkling snow shined around them. As they traveled, Rico meowed, “I wonder how Clan life will be.”
Crystal mewed, “Yeah, I agree.”
They finally came upon Runningpaw. “You came!” she exclaimed.
“Why wouldn’t we?” purred Crystal.
Runningpaw started to pad away, “Come on! Let’s go home!” The four cats ran towards where the camp lies. “We’re getting closer!”
They came to a place where the ground descended into a large pit. Large piles of snow were around it. There was a strong scent of cat in the air.
Runningpaw stopped at the edge, “Something’s not right. Something bad has happened.” She padded around to a place with no snow blocking the pit. It was an entrance.
“Why not just run in through the snow?” asked Rico. He ran toward a pile of snow. There was a thick bonk and a mew, “Ouch!”
Crystal and Thorn let out a mrrow of laughter. “Here’s your sign.” They chuckled. Rico joined them, “Not funny, guys.”
“Come on in.” meowed Runningpaw. They went into the entrance.
Dispite the snow, it was warm inside. Crystal noticed several cats looking at her. There was also a beige cat lying on the floor. The body was limp, showing no sign of breathing. Crystal saw cats putting their noses into his belly fur. Among those cats she recognized Softvoice. A brown tabby tom walked up to her and murmured something. Softvoice mewed something back, nodded, then got up. She jumped up onto a snowy ledge and faced the clearing.
“IceClan cats, “she yowled, “come into the clearing to hear my announcement.”
Cats came into the clearing. Runningpaw moved to a spot with them, gesturing Crystal, Thorn, and Rico to sit beside her with her tail. They came over and sat next to her.
“I have very sad news – “meowed Softvoice.
“That we have three kittypets in our Clan?” spat a cat.
Crystal’s fur bristled. So the Clan wasn’t going to accept her friends and her into the Clan? Anger burned inside her.
Softvoice hissed, “You know that Leafbare’s coming soon! And we don’t have many apprentices!” The cat silenced.
Softvoice continued, “The sad news is really that our faithful leader, Battlestar, has just lost his last life. Thank you, Badgerclaw, for bringing him back.” A brown and black tome puffed out his chest. He had a scar across his chest in the shape of an X. She dipped her head. Cries were heard from the crowd. Crystal looked to Runningpaw. The white and black she-cat’s eyes had formed tears. Crystal wiped them away with her tail. Runningpaw smiled.
“So as deputy, I will take the place as leader of IceClan. I will venture to mooncave at moonhigh. And also there will be a new deputy.” Every cat looked at Badgerclaw. He smiled happily and got up, ready to become the deputy.
“Softfur will be our new deputy.” The tabby toms eyes lit up and Badgerclaw’s mouth gaped.
“It will be an honor to be IceClan’s deputy. I will serve well.”meowed Softfur.
“Will Battlestar now hunt with StarClan. Our loss of one cat has brought us great news to have three more. Cats of IceClan, I welcome you Crystal, Thorn, and Rico.” She gestured them up to join her on the snowledge. She put her tail on Thorns shoulder. “I, Softvoice, leader of IceClan, say these words for StarClan to accept. Thorn, will you accept your place in the Clan and obey the warrior code?”
The black tom answered, “Yes.”
“Will you train your hardest to become a warrior of this Clan? Will you battle the dangers that have yet to come, even at the risk of death? Will you respect all elders of the Clan and do everything they tell you?”
“Yes.”
“From now on you will be known as Nightpaw, for your black as night pelt and lovely green eyes.” She meowed.
Chants were heard from the clearing. They were saying, “Nightpaw! Nightpaw!”
Nightpaw puffed out his chest, “Thank you!”
Next it was Rico’s turn. After asking all the questions, she meowed, “From now on you will be known as Icepaw, for your sapphire eyes and white as snow pelt.” The cats chanted his name too.
Finally, Crystal was the last one to receive a name. “From now on you will be known as Frostpaw, for those mysterious frost blue eyes of the Siamese cat.” Yeah, but my nation thought otherwise. They think it should be sapphire. She thought. Once again were the name chants: “Frostpaw! Frostpaw!”
“This meeting is now over.” Softvoice concluded and jumped down from the snowledge. She padded to the medicine cats den. Softfur met her along the way. “I am going to take our newest apprentices with me while I go to moonave. While we are gone, I want you to decide who will mentor who.” Softvoice disappeared into the medicine cats den.
Frostpaw, Nightpaw, and Icepaw jumped down from the snowledge. Runningpaw ran to them, “Frostpaw! Nightpaw! Icepaw! You all did great!”
“Thanks Runningpaw.” They meowed.
“Come on. I need to show you the apprentices den.” She walked into a hollow. Frostpaw and her friends followed her. A ginger tom walked in after them. “Looks like Softvoice forgot to take off your collar, Frostpaw.” He meowed.
Frostpaw turned and looked at him. She had wondrous brown eyes and a great looking pelt. He was the handsomest cat in the Clan that she’d seen so far.
“My name’s Flamepaw.” The tom meowed.
Frostpaw gulped, “N-n-nice t-to m-meet you.” Her tail tip curled.
Flamepaw perked his ears, “Do you want me to get Softvoice and remind her that your collar needs to be taken off?”
Frostpaw smiled. Her cheeks felt like they were burning, “Sure. And thank you.”
He nodded to her and dashed out of the den. Frostpaw joined her friends. Runningpaw meowed, “This is my nest right here. Flamepaw’s is over there. You may sleep in between us if you like. Extra moss and bedding are over there, “She pointed to a pile of bedding. “Make your nest and then we’ll get some prey.” Nightpaw was already getting bedding in his mouth. He made his nest and then helped Icepaw with his. Icepaw got tons of moss in his fur. They all helped get it out after making Frostpaw’s nest. She made hers next to Flamepaw’s.
They padded their way out of the apprentices den. The body of Battlestar was already gone. Then Frostpaw, Nightpaw, and Icepaw noticed Softvoice waiting for them at the entrance. She had four bundles of herbs at her paws. They came to her, asking, “What are those?”
Softvoice looked down at the herbs, “These are traveling herbs. They help you travel to far places without stopping to hunt.”
Frostpaw took one in her mouth, “They’re bitter tasting!”
Nightpaw and Icepaw wrinkled their noses, “Ick!”
After they ate, Frostpaw said goodbye to Runningpaw, “Sorry I couldn’t eat prey with you!”
“S’okay. Now go on!” She meowed.
Frostpaw noticed Flamepaw. She waved her tail as a goodbye. He acknowledged her message and gave a nod. The group headed out the entrance. Softvoice led the three cats through the forest. They came to a place with four rocks, surrounding them were trees. The trees made a circle blocking what was inside. There was a gap big enough for cats to slip through. The area inside was big enough to fit plenty of cats.
“This is Circle Trees, where the Clans come for meetings; and where one may find a mate.” meowed Softvoice.
There was a stale scent of many cats here. Frostpaw asked, “When will my collar be taken off?”
Softvoice turned to her, “Oh yes, Flamepaw told me about that. By the end of this journey it will be off for good, but not now. As soon as we get out of Clan territory, I will find a way. Now let’s not linger any longer.”
They padded out of Circle Trees into a new territory. It was a moor with hills and very little trees in the area. There was no snow here, just long blades of grass. How very queer…Thought Frostpaw. The group traveled with caution here. Softvoice stopped, her ears alert and whiskers twitching. Frostpaw saw a rabbit close by. It was happily munching on grass. She crouched down and crept toward it. But before she pounced, Softvoice caterwauled, “Frostpaw! Not here!”
Too late. The she-cat had pounced and killed the rabbit. Joy ran through her blood. She had killed her first prey! She opened her jaws to eat it, even though she wasn’t hungry. But a paw smacked her across the cheek. Luckily the claws were unsheathed or it would have wounded her badly. Frostpaw looked up to see Softvoice, her nostrils flaring. She looked around franticly, as if expecting an attack.
“You’re not supposed to eat that!” she hissed.
Frostpaw i like banna ice creamed her head, “Why, is it poisoned?”
Here was her answer. There was a thudding of paws and a yowl of attack. “FireClan! Set flame to their pelts!” Three cats jumped out from behind a hill. A ginger she-cat pounced on Frostpaw. These cats had a new scent on them. Frostpaw clawed at the ginger cat. It clawed back. The two cats wrestled. In the heat of battle, Sftvoice caterwauled, “Stop!”
The fighting stopped. There was a gray tom facing Softvoice. She meowed, “The warrior code allows safe passage in FireClan territory on the way to mooncave.” That explains for the hot smell, thought Frostpaw.
The gray tom spat, “Without catching any prey. Your little apprentice killed a rabbit, so it gives us the right to call it an invasion and attack.”
“She’s a new apprentice and doesn’t know anything!” Softvoice meowed.
Oh, gee, thanks Softvoice. I feel so stupid when you say that. Thought Frostpaw.
The gray tom looked at Frostpaw.
